Is it too late to vote for the Australian of the Year? Because we’ve got a couple of true blue candidates right here.
Gold Coast blokes James Ross-Munro and Kane Wiblen were at an Arundel service station late on Saturday night when they saw thieves break into a nearby Oporto.
Knowing that something dodgy was going down, the shirtless James ran over to the getaway car, a white Commodore with no registration plates. Running was particularly difficult for James, who had just ‘busted a plugga’ (broken his thongs).
That’s when James had the ingenious idea to take the keys from the ignition while the thieves were still inside the Oporto.
When they reappeared and tried to get into their car, James jumped in after them. A quick punch-on ensued, but with James still in possession of their keys, the thwarted robbers were forced to make their getaway on foot.
James and Kane, who filmed the entire incident, then took after the robbers on foot, but were unable to catch the robbers — or, as James posted on Facebook, “I chased them but because I’m fat they got away”.
Gold Coast police have confirmed that the robbers fled west along Brisbane Road towards Helensvale. Police have a 23-year-old man in custody, but are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
