This might just be Australian soccer’s shining moment.

Sure, the Socceroos went down to the Netherlands overnight, but absolutely nobody would call that a bad result. The Netherlands were the runners-up at the last World Cup and opened this one by smashing the reigning champs, Spain, by four goals. So our close (3-2) loss to the Dutch was, frankly, kind of a miracle.

And there was nothing more miraculous about it than Tim Cahill’s goal at the 21st minute, as he smoked an unbelievable shot straight past the Dutch goalie and just under the cross bar.

The loss eliminated the Socceroos from this World Cup, but heralded their arrival as a genuine threat on the world stage.
