Dumped Queensland MP Peter Dowling didn’t have the support of Premier Campbell Newman, even before his preselection bid.
Redlands MP Peter Dowling didn’t have the support of Premier Campbell Newman before having his preselection bid rejected by branch members of his Queensland seat.
Mr Dowling, dogged by scandal during his time as Redlands MP after it was revealed he sent pictures of his penis dipped in a glass of red wine to his mistress, had previously survived a vetting process by the Liberal National Party executive by one vote.
But on Saturday, branch members voted not to be represented by him at the 2015 state election.
The party has reopened preselections for Redlands, but Mr Dowling’s chapter was “absolutely” over, Mr Newman said in Brisbane on Monday.
“I look forward to a great new candidate being selected by the rank and file LNP members in Redlands, to contest the next election and provide representation for the people down there,” he said.
Mr Newman had previously stated he supported all sitting MPs recontesting their seats, but last week indicated he had a “firm view” about Mr Dowling’s future.
On Monday, with the branch vote having been cast, Mr Newman revealed his view.
“It was reflected on the weekend,” he said.
Asked about his change of stance after once stating every MP should be re-endorsed, Mr Newman refused to comment further.
