A man will face a far north Queensland court charged with raping and bashing a woman while drinking with friends on a central Cairns street.

A woman was bashed and raped by a friend while the pair were drinking with a group of people on a street in far north Queensland, police say.

It’s alleged the pair were drinking with a group on a central Cairns street when the man bashed then raped the 47-year-old woman just before midnight on Monday.

Officers say the man then assaulted a 38-year-old woman who tried to intervene.

Both women received cuts and other non-life threatening injuries and were taken to a Cairns hospital for treatment.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is facing two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm and one count each of rape, sexual assault and resisting police.

He will appear in the Cairns Magistrates Count on Wednesday.
