A pre-dawn fishing adventure off Queensland’s Fraser Island went wrong when a man’s small fishing boat sank – sparking a helicopter rescue in darkness.

A fisherman has been plucked from the ocean by a helicopter in a daring pre-dawn rescue off Queensland’s Fraser Island.

The 60-year-old activated an emergency beacon when his boat sank about 4am and he was in the water for about an hour-and-a-half before help arrived.

An air crewman aboard a Bundaberg-based RACQ CareFlight chopper was winched down to pick him up and he was taken to Hervey Bay Hospital suffering suspected hypothermia.
