Hope Vale banana farm workers will get the dole for 13 weeks while north Queensland councils will get recovery assistance after Cyclone Ita.

North Queensland communities hit by Cyclone Ita will get access to emergency state and federal government assistance to help them rebuild.

And workers in the indigenous community of Hope Vale will get access to a recovery relief allowance. The payments will particularly benefit workers of devastated banana farms.

Federal Justice Minister Michael Keenan says the 13-week payments – which are the equivalent of Newstart – will help local employees, primary producers and sole traders recover.

Some north Queensland farmers hit by the cyclone will also get concessional loans and freight subsidies.

Funds will be given to the local councils of Burdekin, Cassowary Coast, Hinchinbrook, Lockhart River, Mackay, Palm Island, Tablelands, Townsville, Whitsunday and Yarrabah, to rebuild public infrastructure.

Mr Keenan said further assistance could be provided as Ita’s impact becomes clearer.
