No.1 draft pick Tom Boyd will play alongside fellow GWS Giants forwards Jeremy Cameron and Jonathon Patton in Friday’s practice match against Adelaide.
GWS Giants will finally unleash their celebrated trio of power forwards together for the first time when No.1 draft pick Tom Boyd makes his senior bow on Friday.
The 200cm 18-year-old Boyd has been named in the squad for the Giants’ last pre-season game against Adelaide.
He will take his place in the Giants attack alongside All-Australian forward Jeremy Cameron and former No.1 draft pick Jonathon Patton.
Boyd kicked three goals for the reserves against an ACT under-23 side in Canberra last week in his first hitout in a Giants uniform.
GWS will field four No.1 draft picks on Friday, with midfielders Tom Scully and Lachie Whitfield returning after missing the 68-point win over St Kilda last week.
Vice-captain Scully has recovered from an ankle injury, while Whitfield has shaken off a hamstring issue.
Among the players rested from the Giants final pre-season hitout are recruits Shane Mumford and Josh Hunt.
Sydney have recalled several quality players for their last pre-season practice match match against Brisbane in Burpengary.
Among those returning are co-captains Kieren Jack and Jarrad McVeigh and fellow midfielders Josh Kennedy and Tom Mitchell,
Key defender Ted Richards and small forward-midfielder Ben McGlynn are also back after being rested from last week’s game against West Coast.
Sydney coach John Longmire is hoping the return of most of his midfield stars will create more opportunities for star recruit Lance Franklin, who was starved of the ball against West Coast, tallying just six touches.
He suggested former Richmond ruckman Tom Derickx was leading the battle to back-up Mike Pyke after strong performances over the last two weeks.
Longmire said Pyke will get more game time in the ruck this week.
