To celebrate his 18th birthday, Queensland teenager Jack Barrie has signed with Major League Baseball franchise the Minnesota Twins.
Talented Queensland teenager Jack Barrie has signed a lucrative deal with Major League Baseball outfit the Minnesota Twins on his 18th birthday.
The contract, confirmed on Monday, is believed to be worth six figures.
Barrie was a standout for Queensland’s gold medal-winning Bandits in last month’s under-18 national championships in Canberra, where he was awarded the tournament’s Golden Bat.
The infielder became one of few players to claim a cycle – hitting a single, double, triple and home run in the same game.
Barrie’s mum, Nicole, said she is ecstatic for her son.
“Jack has practised and practised and practised; he eats, sleeps and breathes baseball,” she said.
“It is wonderful to see his hard work has paid off, but this is only the beginning of a long road and Jack knows if he is going to go all the way, he has to work even harder.”
The 18-year-old will head to the US in March for Spring training.
