Ben Johnson has pulled out of the New Zealand Cycle Classic with a gashed elbow after a collision with a vehicle towing a caravan.

A collision with a vehicle towing a caravan has forced a devastated Ben Johnson to pull out of this week’s New Zealand Cycle Classic.

Johnson suffered a deep gash to his left elbow which required six stitches, plus various cuts and bruises.

“I am really disappointed not to be in New Zealand,” Johnson said on Tuesday.

“I was coming off some great form following the Bright training camp and nationals and I was looking forward to racing.

“I had a good opportunity to get a result there and Drapac has sent a very strong team over. I’m devastated.”

The incident happened on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast on Sunday morning, Drapac Professional Cycling said in a statement.

Dutchman Wouter Wippert will be making his debut for the team as Johnson’s replacement.
