Iron Man 3 was the highest grossing film of 2013, ahead of Despicable Me 2, Fast & Furious 6, Monsters University and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

Iron Man 3 is the highest-grossing film of 2013, raking in $US1.2 billion ($A1.35 billion) at the global box office.

Robert Downey Jr.’s latest outing as Tony Stark and his superhero alter-ego trumped Despicable Me 2, which claimed second place with $US918.4 million ($A1.03 billion).

Fast & Furious 6 raced into third with a $US788.7 million haul, while Monsters University ($US743.6 million) came fourth.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire ($US738.3 million), which was released only in November, was No 5.

Other films featured in the end-of-year top 10 countdown include Gravity, Thor: The Dark World and World War Z.
