Fortitude Valley’s Umami Bar & Asian Tapas launched its new look and new menu with a VIP party and quirky cocktails aplenty.
‘Umami’, or savoury, is considered the ‘fifth taste’, after sweetness, sourness, bitterness, and saltiness.
Located in Fortitude Valley’s Chinatown mall, Umami Bar & Asian Tapas has been revamped with a more approachable share-style menu, in an attempt to make the dining experience feel less like a meal and more like a party.
Umami Bar explores the fifth taste with a range of Asian fusion share plates that have been designed by a team of chefs, with Minh Le (formerly of The Foraging Quail) at the helm of the kitchen. Offerings include the wagyu sirloin steak, classic duck wontons, and the crowd-favourite VFC — Viet Fried Chicken.
The menu also includes quirky desserts like the Astro Bo(y)mn, featuring a liquid nitrogen bomb, lemon curd and passionfruit jelly.
The signature Umami Bubble-Chi-Lada (a piña colada slushy with tapioca pearls) headlines the cocktail menu, and in keeping with the new share plate approach, there’s a shared cocktail — the Smoking Eye of the Dragon, a spicy, fruity, citrus concoction made to be shared with your crew.
The interior has also gotten an overhaul. When you step through the unassuming doorway into the venue, you’ll be greeted with a wall of waving lucky cats, and when you sit down to eat, you’ll find retro art on the walls. And you won’t be able to miss the bright neon lucky cat, intended to bolster your good fortune.
