The Brisbane Bullets have wrapped up their 2016/17 season by celebrating their best performers at the club’s Most Valuable Player Awards.

Hosted by Charli Robinson and Richard Champion and held at the Royal International Convention Centre in Bowen Hills, the event paid tribute to the Bullets’ star players after the team’s long-awaited revival season.

While it would be difficult to call the season a success — the club finished with the wooden spoon — most fans were just thrilled to have their team back after eight years in the wilderness.

There were encouraging signs for the future, too, like the play of American import Torrey Craig, who was named the Leroy Loggins MVP (as voted by the NBL, players, members and the media) and the Ladbrokes Members MVP (reflecting his popularity with Bullets season members).

As well as his honours at the club’s awards night, Craig has also been named the NBL’s Best Defensive Player of the 2016/17 season, and was named in the All NBL Seconds.

Guard Adam Gibson, the only player on the roster who was also part of the Bullets’ 2007 championship team, was named the club’s Player’s Player, despite having his season cut short when he went down with a calf injury against the Illawarra Hawks.

Up-and-comer Tom Fullarton was recognised as the best non-rostered team member aged under 20, taking out Young Player of the Year honours. Fullarton, who captained Australia’s Under-17 men’s side at the world championships last June, was chosen for the award by Bullets coaches Andrej Lemanis, CJ Bruton and Mick Downer.

Brisbane Bullets general manager Richard Clarke said the club is thrilled to be back in the NBL, despite the challenges of the 2016/17 season.

“We certainly faced hurdles along the way, but injuries are a reality of sport and we’re just grateful for the support Brisbane has shown us in welcoming back the Bullets this season,” he said.

“As well as acknowledging the individual successes of the players, tonight was a celebration of the whole group’s effort and in laying the foundation of the club’s success into the future.

“We look forward to seeing our members when we tip off for the 2017/18 season later in the year.”
