Lord Mayor Graham Quirk congratulated all the winners at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards ceremony, held before 1200 guests in Brisbane’s City Hall.

A film from Palestine on life in a country divided has won Best Feature Film in the seventh annual Asia Pacific Screen Awards.

Omar is the first film to be fully funded by the Palestinian film industry. Directed by Hany Abu-Assad it stars Israeli actor Adam Bakri, is his first feature role and is Palestine’s official submission to the 2014 Academy Awards Best Foreign Language Film category,” Cr Quirk said. “Omar exemplifies the outstanding quality of all 39 films from 22 Asia Pacific countries and areas nominated for awards tonight.”

“The awards are the highest accolade in film for the region,” Cr Quirk said. “They also bring the international spotlight to Brisbane and attract leading cultural, business and political figures from through the Asia Pacific.”

Films from, India, People’s Republic of China and Republic of Korea took home two awards each. Films from Bangladesh, Islamic Republic of Iran, Russian Federation and Singapore also collected awards while two special mentions went to nominees from Kazakhstan and Iraqi Kurdistan.
