What is on your wardrobe must have checklist? Looking back on our sartorial choices of the year 2013, is there anything you wish you’d tried? Any fashion stone left unturned?
If you’ve wanted to step outside your style comfort zone with some of this year’s trend pieces but haven’t been sure how, I’ve got some tips in what I’d like to call the The Wardrobe must have Checklist.
Here’s the first of my wardrobe favourites you might have seen this year but haven’t tried for yourself, and how to make them work for you.
The maxi dress
Those who live in and love a maxi dress appreciate its comfort, elegance and flattery. The key is to find one that is waisted so it gives you some shape. They’ll either be joined high (great for hourglass and apple figures) or low (good for everyone else) on the waist so choose the best style for you.
Maxis will always look better with a heel but a flat metallic sandal is a good casual option.

The summer scarf
I’m a big advocate of a great summer scarf. This is what I call the light-weight cotton scarves you can sling nonchalantly around your neck to complete your outfit and take the chill away if you’re in air conditioning or catch a cool breeze at night. Witchery make the best I’ve found in this price range as they’re beautifully draping and wear really well.

A bright pop of lipstick can pick you up on the most dull-feeling days. I always get compliments when I wear a bright lipstick and love the way it makes me feel. I often hear women say they don’t think they can pull off a bright lip colour, but trust me, there’s one (… many) out there for everyone. Visit your favourite makeup counter and get some expert advice on the best bright red, pink or orange for you.
The high-maintenance factor of bright lipstick can also scare some ladies from trying it on, but for this I can recommend Lime Crime’s Velvetines range. available at Makeup and Glow in Paddington, these lipsticks now come in three colours (a gorgeous pinup red, a tangerine and a pink) and are matt but not dry, and last all day. I wore the red for my wedding and it lasted all day and evening and I didn’t even have to reapply.
Lime Crime Velvetines lipsticks $23.95 at Makeup and Glow.
Please check in on Sunday for part two.
