This week I have been a footy widow. I know what you are thinking, my husband does not play football. And you would be correct in thinking that.

The problem is, his best friend does, and that best friend is about to play for Australia in the world cup. A feat that is not lost on me. So when my husband chose a very public place ( the Pineapple Hotel) to tell me, in front of said best friend, that he wanted to go over to England and follow the football team around I wasn’t quite in a position to oppose. I did on the inside, my inner self was down right cranky at the thought of being left to work and look after our child without him, but on the outside the ‘good wife’ in me said ‘As you wish’. Hence I am now a footy widow.
And so for the last 10 days I have spent every evening, right at witching hour trying to feed, bath and bed a tired little girl who misses her Daddy, having worked all day myself, while talking on Facetime to that Daddy and hear about his fabulous once in a lifetime opportunity.
Normally I’m a pretty chilled out wife, but on top of him visiting the Queen, which he did, and then actually saw her as she left the palace and drove within 2 meters of him, he had been away in China for work the week preceding that. I tell you this so you can put what I did when he wrote me a rather lovely love letter into perspective. To put it bluntly I believe husbands and wives are meant to live together with no mileage between them. I’m pretty over being a work/ non-football playing footy widow. I’d like to first salute all the single mothers and mothers whose husbands are away for long stretches of time for work, I don’t know how you do it. I admire you.
So hubby sent me this sweet short note the other night when we had failed to communicate that day.
Hello my love , we have made it to Cardiff. We went to Bath and to Bristol first.
Bath is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. The buildings are amazing. Bristol is just a big industrial town.
I know you don’t want me to say it but I wish you were here. This week is a tough week because i’m missing you and Millie so much.
I am enjoying myself I just wish you could be here. I want to do this all again but with you and Millie.
At some point I will learn my lesson not to go away without you.
I hope you have a great day. Love you
This is what I replied with.

I hope I have great day, I love you sometimes….E
He got the point and asked if I wanted a nice gift from the motherland when he got home. I don’t, I just want him to come home for a decent stretch of time to allow me to go to the bathroom alone with no one sitting at my feet looking up to assess my technique.
But good luck to the boys tonight, Aussie Aussie Aussie and all that. Make sure you win, after which, I would like my husband back.
