Artie & Mai has just opened on Sandgate road, in the iconic ‘red’ building, this little gem is hard to miss.

The duo behind this new venue are Monica & Jimmy Strong, and they’re bringing with them a wealth of hospitality experience from overseas and Australia – most recently having run Bicycle Garage in Sydney. They believe in strong family and community values and have emphasised that through the layout of communal tables and offerings of shar plates on the menu.

“Artie and Mai’s is the kind of place where you might drop in for a drink or two, and end up staying for dinner, just like you do with friends and family. It’s built on the philosophy of sharing – food, drink and good times – from the communal tables to the breakfast feast, which is a new twist on the shared dining experience that is currently so popular,” says Monica.

So what’s on the menu? With a French chef in a Brisbane kitchen, you can expect the new Australian classics with a good Gallic twist. The day menu runs until 3pm, offering everything from French toast with prosciutto & honey to a poached pear, crispy apple with roast walnut & pork salad. The evening menu offers pizzas, charcuterie grazing plates, a Chateau Briand served with rustic chips and roasted mushroom jus, and spiced apple tart, to name a few. There’s a concise takeaway menu available for those on the run, made up of bready delights like the classic beef burger, egg & bacon roll and delicious sandwiches (I’ll take the cider-roasted pork sandwich with apple sauce, please).

Drinks start with Belaroma coffee, milkshakes and freshly-squeezed juices, and move into locally crafted beers, wine and cocktails in the afternoon.

If you’re after a more exclusive affair, there’s a private dining room for up to twelve people, offering it’s own breakfast feast option by day and a family banquet menu for evening occasions.
