Stand-up comedian Ayanna Dookie reveals she turned a blind eye to her boyfriend’s infidelity, until she found out he was a killer.
In an interview with the New York Post, Ayanna says it was an early Sunday morning in 2008 when she found out the unbelievable news.
She says she received a weird text message from her friend Ryan saying “So sorry about what happened.”
“What are you talking about?” she responded.
“Just Google Spike’s real name,” Ryan replied.
So, Ayanna did.
“I froze as I read the chilling words – it said he was ‘being held for the murder of his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend’,” Ayanna says.
“It didn’t make any sense. I was Spike’s girlfriend. I didn’t have any ex-boyfriends.”
Spike allegedly killed his other girlfriend’s former lover, who had broken into her house when he was staying over. The men got into a fight and Spike shot him eight times, instantly killing him.
“Of all the ways to find out that your boyfriend is cheating on you, this one took the cake,” she says.
Ayanna says she first met Spike at a party in 2004, and couldn’t believe her luck. But there were warning signs that things weren’t right from the start.
“About a year into the relationship, a girl I’d never met before took me aside and said, ‘I know where I know your boyfriend from’,” she says.
“The implication was that she’d seen him with another woman.”
And, “without missing a beat, I said, ‘I don’t want to know’ and walked away.”
Ayanna says she was fine with living in denial.
“At the time, it was devastating – not because what happened confirm that Spike was cheating, but because my boyfriend was locked in jail on $100,000 bail,” she says.
“At first, to the disgust of my friends, I decided to stand by my man.”
But, “a couple of weeks later I had a wakeup call.”
Ayanna never contacted Spike again, but heard that his lawyers got him off on grounds of self-defence.
