The echidna taken from the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary has been recovered.

A man has been charged in connection to the theft of an echidna from an enclosure at a Currumbin sanctuary on Saturday 1 August.

Piggie the echidna was recovered safe and well last night after she was left under a fence at the sanctuary.

A 24-year-old man has been charged with receiving tainted property and animal cruelty. He is due to appear in Southport Magistrates Court today.

Following the kidnapping, police revealed that two men cut away netting to gain access to an enclosure containing a number of echidnas.The first man attempted to remove three different echidnas from nesting boxes without success.

The second man then entered the enclosure and has been able to remove Piggie from her nesting box.

Investigations are continuing.

It is understood Piggie is doing well and recovering from her kidnapping ordeal.
