“The struggle is real.”
It’s something people say when they have ‘first world problems’.
Do you have to wake up early on Sunday? The struggle is real. Do you have more clothes than clothes hangers? The struggle is real. Do you need to charge your phone, but your charger is across the room? The struggle is real.
Did you put your pyjamas on already, only to remember that you need to go out again? Oh, you know the struggle is real.
Let’s be honest. I don’t know about you, but I’ve had it pretty easy in life. My struggle has never been real. Society’s deck is stacked firmly in my favour — I’m a white, straight, healthy male in my 20s, living in the developed world and raised by a loving family. I’ve had every advantage and every opportunity.
I’ve never faced discrimination. I’ve never experienced poverty and homelessness. I’ve never been a victim of violence, domestic or otherwise. And I wasn’t born with a disease like cerebral palsy. But plenty of people are.
Every 14 hours, a child is born with cerebral palsy, making it the most common childhood physical disability in Australia. People with cerebral palsy have said it’s like being trapped in a body you can’t control.
Their struggle is real.
That’s why, on Friday 14 August, I’ll be locked into a gondola on the Wheel of Brisbane with bmag Deputy Editor Laura Brodnik until we raise $5,000 for the Cerebral Palsy League.
All up, the 40 execs taking part are aiming to raise $200,000, which can provide 380 hours of vital therapy, 1,086 hours of home support and respite, five powered wheelchairs and innovative life-skills programs.
The best part is that you don’t have to wait until August 14 to start making donations — you can show your support for the CPL’s Wheel Make A Change initiative right now by visiting www.wheel15.everydayhero.com/au/rohan-williams-laura-brodnik.
Spread the word, and let’s help some people who’ve never had it easy to live the lives they choose!
