The wait is over, Legacy Way is finally open for business.
Lord Mayor Graham Quirk has announced that the $1.5 billion Legacy Way tunnel will open to vehicles late tonight.
The 4.6 kilometre tunnel will halve travel times during peak hour and provide a four minute journey from the Western Freeway at Toowong to the ICB at Kelvin Grove.
Legacy Way is the largest piece of infrastructure built by a local council anywhere in Australia.
Cr Quirk told 612 ABC Brisbane the tunnel would help reduce congestion.
“Milton Road and Coronation Drive will be two of the big beneficiaries, whether it will come as early as tomorrow morning – but certainly in the coming days as people get familiar with it and start to use it we’ll start to see some relief in those two road networks,” he said.
A trip through the tunnel is expected to take just four minutes with up to 14 minutes being saved on current journey times.
When it opens, every motorist that takes the tunnel will be making a contribution to Legacy, a charitable organisation that provides support to the families of Defence Force veterans.
Legacy cares for more than 90,000 widows and 1,900 children throughout Australia and makes a valuable difference in the lives of those it supports.
