It’s time to take stock of what we appreciate about Brisbane, writes Lord Mayor Graham Quirk.

With the world’s eyes focused on our city in less than six months and preparation well underway, it’s important that we take the time to remember exactly what we appreciate about Brisbane.

As a city we have a lot to be proud of. With our friendliness, lifestyle, accessibility, inclusiveness and investment opportunities, our city is undeniably a great place. We are also constantly punching above our weight in many fields from world-class scientific researchers and entrepreneurs to artists and sporting heroes.

For all these reasons, and the many others that make our city so great, I want to encourage you to get behind Team Brisbane.

What is Team Brisbane?

Team Brisbane is a campaign to get us thinking about our city and our collective achievements. But more importantly, it is about all of us doing what we can to sell a positive message about our city both interstate and overseas. It’s about making sure we tell friends, business colleagues or acquaintances about what Brisbane has to offer.

We should never underestimate the importance of their actions. It encourages tourism and investment and that in turn secures our financial future through creating jobs.

The Team Brisbane campaign will provide a strong platform for us to capitalise on our city’s imminent international exposure coming from the G20, Asia Cup soccer, Asia Pacific Screen Awards, Global Café, cricket’s World Cup and Test matches.

Some of our region’s most renowned sons and daughters, including Keith Urban, Li Cunxin, Pat Rafter, Dami Im and Professor Ian Frazer, are all part of our Team Brisbane campaign to celebrate our city’s success. With so many world-class achievers coming together, it is a powerful reminder of how far we have come as a city.

I want local residents and businesses to be proud of Brisbane’s development into an emerging global city. Over the next few months we will be launching a series of events and activities across the city, with lots of opportunities for all of Brisbane to get involved.

In the meantime, you can be part of Team Brisbane conversations and events by using the hashtags #teambne or #brisbaneanyday or by visiting

Whether the achievements are the result of high-profile identities, our unsung heroes or our everyday heroes, the Team Brisbane spirit is about the fact we all have a role to play in promoting our city and its future.
