Nominations for the 2014 Queensland Reconciliation Awards are now open and Queensland rugby league hero Jonathan Thurston will be the ambassador for the awards for the second year in a row.

The Queensland Reconciliation Awards is an opportunity for advocates of reconciliation to be recognised for their endeavours. Thurston, captain of the North Queensland Cowboys, Kangaroos player and State of Origin Legend has been the award ambassador since 2013.

Premier Newman had high praise for Thurston’s commitment to the cause.

“I would like to thank Johnathan Thurston for continuing his role as award ambassador and his unwavering commitment to honouring the history and traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.”

Thurston who is known for his work with the indigenous community is proud to again be part of the awards.

“I’m very proud to represent the awards and their work in recognising the commitment, initiative and innovation that enriches our Indigenous community.

“It is a cause that is very close to my heart and one that I devote as much time as I can to during the rugby league season.”

Mr Newman encourages everyone to nominate someone in their community who is active in reconciliation.

“They could be building cross-cultural understanding through employment or training initiatives, education, partnerships or engaging their local community,” Mr Newman said.

Over the past 11 years, the awards have recognised more than 150 outstanding Queensland initiatives demonstrating reconciliation in action.

Mr Newman also believes these projects are important in kick-starting change across the nation.

“Some of these projects are not only making a significant impact in local communities, but stimulating change across Queensland and Australia.”

A total of $25,000 in prize money is available across the five award categories of Business, Community, Education, Partnership and the Premier’s Reconciliation Award.

Nominations close Monday 3 March 2014.
