The Go Between Bridge will be toll free this New Years Eve in hopes to alleviate traffic around Brisbane City.
This New Year’s Eve, the Go Between Bridge that provides a crossing between Coronation Drive and South Brisbane, will be toll free. Queensland Motorways Group, in partnership with Brisbane City Council, have agreed travel will be free over the bridge during Brisbane’s New Year’s Eve celebrations.
The toll will be waived from 6pm on Tuesday, December 31 to 2am Wednesday, January 1.
There will be a large number of road and bridge closures required for New Year’s events and associated fireworks displays. So the bridge will be needed to make sure travellers do no get caught in traffic jams crossing the river.
Deputy Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the bridge should help motorists get home in a timely manner.
“The toll free period during New Year’s Eve will help motorists enjoy a quicker trip to and from the festivities in and around South Bank,” Cr Schrinner said.
Cr Schrinner said the traffic lane closures would affect a number of inner-city streets including the Victoria Bridge, and motorists should consider alternatives such as the Go Between Bridge when travelling to and from the city’s best vantage points for the night.
“The city is always a popular place for people to celebrate New Year’s Eve, so be mindful that these areas will be busier than normal and that various road closures will be in place,” he said.
The Go Between Bridge is the most direct way to get between South Brisbane and the northern and western suburbs, with average time savings of up to 13 minutes during peak times.
Cr Schrinner believes New Year’s Eve is a perfect time for drivers to make use of the bridge and see its benefits.
“The Go Between Bridge was constructed to help ease congestion by providing another river crossing in and out of South Brisbane, and New Year’s Eve presents the perfect opportunity for motorists to utilise the structure.”
For residents and visitors taking public transport on the night, it’s recommended that you plan ahead where possible.
