Brisbane cinephiles will get a taste of Melbourne’s annual genre film festival when The Monster Fest Travelling Sideshow comes to town this month.

Monster Pictures’ touring satellite event will open on Friday 12 May with an Aussie double bill featuring Ben Young’s Hounds of Love and Damien Power’s Killing Ground. Both films have been showered with praise at prestigious international festivals, and will play The Monster Fest Travelling Sideshow ahead of their theatrical release here.

The fright-filled weekend will also include a shiny new 4K restoration of legendary Italian director Dario Argento’s 1977 masterpiece, Suspiria. A remake of the horror classic is on its way with Tilda Swinton and Dakota Johnson, but this is your chance to see the original on the big screen, complete with its infamous synth score by Italian prog rock group Goblin.

Other highlights of the program include the creature feature Cave Dive, Aussie director Sean Byrne’s The Devil’s Candy (his follow-up to The Loved Ones), and The Evil Within, a bizarre film directed by Andrew Getty, the late heir to the Getty oil fortune, who sank $6 million of his own fortune into the project before his death.

The festival will also feature Sundance favourite 78-52, a doco that takes an in-depth look at the shower scene from Psycho, the screen murder that changed the course of cinema. 78-52 features interviews with film buffs and filmmakers alike, including Guillermo del Toro, Bret Easton Ellis, Elijah Wood, Eli Roth and Peter Bogdanovich.

Rounding out the program is the Australian premiere of The Void, the latest film from Steven Kostanski (of Manborg and Father’s Day notoriety). Kostanski describes the film as an “unparalleled horror experience filled with terrifying visuals and shocking creature effects, fusing the body terror of The Fly and The Thing with the surreal fear of The Shining and The Exorcist“, that will “evoke the tone and mood of the works of John Carpenter, and J-Horror films such as The Grudge.”

The Monster Fest Travelling Sideshow will come to Event Cinemas Myer Centre from Friday 12 May to Sunday 14 May. Tickets are available now at eventcinemas.com.au.
