American Idiot, the rock musical based on Green Day’s Grammy Award-winning multi-platinum album, is finally making its way down under for its Australian premiere season at QPAC.
QPAC’s Playhouse will be transformed into a grungy mosh pit for the Australian premiere season, which will be exclusive to Brisbane.
Winner of two Tony Awards (and the 2010 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album), American Idiot includes every song from Green Day’s album of the same name, as well as several songs from the follow-up release, 21st Century Breakdown.
Developed by Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong and Tony Award winner Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening), American Idiot does something new with the American musical format, and captures the frustrations, fears, dreams and challenges of life in the media-saturated, post-9/11 era.
The show tells the story of three lifelong friends who are grappling with the decision to either challenge the status quo and break out of their aimless rut, or remain in the safe confines of their suburban existence. Their quest for true meaning leads them on a journey of self-discovery, heartache and revelation.
The Australian premiere season of American Idiot will feature an all-Australian cast, and will be helmed by acclaimed Australian director Craig Ilott (of Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Smoke and Mirrors fame).
“It’s so rare to come across a piece as rich, stimulating and challenging as this,” Ilott says.
“Ultimately it’s a rallying cry from the heart by one of the world’s best bands.
“The album American Idiot redefined Green Day as a band. American Idiot, the musical, challenged what was expected of the form. And now a new production from some of Australia’s finest young theatre makers and performers promises to breathe new life into it.”
Coinciding with Green Day’s Australian tour, the Australian premiere season of American Idiot will run from 23 February 2017. Tickets will go on sale this Friday 28 October at 9am via qpac.com.au.
