Someone at boutique Fortitude Valley bar Barbara is a big Netflix fan.

First, they ventured into The Upside Down and demanded justice for Barb with their Stranger Things-themed party.

Now they’re back for the second instalment in the ‘Barbara’s Original Series’, a themed celebration of The Get Down.

Baz Luhrmann’s Netflix series about the origins of hip hop has divided critics, but there’s no denying that the show’s soundtrack is full of absolute tunes.

The night will cover the whole spectrum of hip hop’s golden years, from its origins in breaks and soul to its clash with disco.

Resident DJs will play through the eras as the night progresses, with Disco Dolani sticking to disco from 8 to 10pm, Spare Time DJs spinning early hip hop and breaks from 10pm to midnight (expect plenty of Eric B & Rakim, NWA and Boogie Down Productions in their set), and Gnash Johnston dropping post-’90s hip hop bangers ’til closing time.

The Get Down will take over Barbara (105/38 Warner Street, Fortitude Valley) this Saturday 24 September from 8pm.
