Sweetie darlings, the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) is inviting you to revisit the first season of Jennifer Saunders’ celebrated sitcom on the big screen.
GOMA will be screening episodes from the first season of Absolutely Fabulous, which follows the adventures of PR maven and full-time fashionista Edina Monsoon (Saunders), and her best friend, magazine fashion director Patsy Stone (Joanna Lumley).
We’ll re-live Eddie’s emergency weight-loss regime, 40th birthday tantrums, last-minute fashion show preparations, a Romanian baby adoption plan, and the endless quest to remain relevant and fashionable.
Two episodes per night will screen on Friday 17 June (Fashion + Fat), Friday 24 June (France + Iso Tank), and Friday 1 July (Magazine + Birthday).
The screenings are free, and no bookings are required.
The screenings are part of the GOMA Cinémathèque’s In Character program, which celebrates actresses and female characters who challenge our expectations for the behaviour, desire and physicality of women on-screen.
The program, a tie-in with the Cindy Sherman exhibition, showcases over 65 works ranging from comedy to noir, documentary, melodrama and exploitation.
In Character features four intersecting programs — Hollywood Babylon, The Lady of the House, Dangerous Relations, and Women in Revolt — and features a broad range of films including Kill Bill, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Death Becomes Her, Sunset Boulevard, Mulholland Drive, Carrie, The Babadook, Sunset Boulevard, All About Eve, Showgirls and Faster, Pussycat, Kill! Kill!
In Character runs from 28 May to 28 August at the GOMA Cinémathèque. For more information, visit qagoma.qld.gov.au.
