Stuck for an idea for a date in the river city? One of the most overlooked options is a trip on a CityCat.

OK, sure, it’s not a gondola in Venice, but there’s still something romantic about a boat trip — even if that boat is a Council-operated ferry.

Maybe it’s for your latest match on Tinder, maybe it’s someone you know through mutual friends, maybe you just want to get the spark back, or even go on a friend date.

No matter what you’re looking for, one of these four great date ideas will be for you!

1. Friday night at Eat Street Markets

Meet

City — Meet up after work and walk down to Eagle Street. Grab a happy hour drink at Bavarian Bier Café or Jade Buddha from 4pm to 6pm. Then jump on a 6:04pm or 6:19pm CityCat bound for Hamilton from the Riverside ferry terminal.

North — Meet at Teneriffe (Eves on the River) or New Farm (Alto at Powerhouse) for a quick vino or cocktail before getting on a 6:34pm or 6:49pm CityCat from Teneriffe, or a 6:20pm or 6:35pm CityCat from NewFarm, bound for Hamilton.

South — Meet at Bulimba and grab a drink at Oxford Tap House or Barcadia. Then jump on a 6:30pm or 6:45pm CityCat heading for Hamilton.

Arrive

You’ll arrive at Brett’s Wharf before 7pm and take a lovely 10 minute walk along the river towards Eat Street Markets. No matter what you or your partner fancy, you’re bound to find it at Eat Street!

Leave

Walk back down to Brett’s Wharf for a 9:03pm or 9:33pm CityCat back to where you left from. What happens after that probably depends how well your date goes! But keep in mind all our suggestions for pre-drinks will still be open when you get back.

2. Sunday afternoon at New Farm

Meet

City — Catch a train or bus into the city, meet up, walk down to Eagle Street and grab a drink at Mr & Mrs G’s or Blackbird. CityCats leave Riverside every 15 minutes, so jump on one heading towards Hamilton.

North — Meet at Portside and grab a drink at Byblos or Belvedere, before walking down to the Brett’s Wharf ferry terminal and getting on a UQ-bound CityCat that leaves every 15 minutes.

South — Meet at West End ferry terminal and jump on a Hamilton-bound CityCat that leaves every 15 minutes.

Arrive

You’ll arrive at New Farm ferry terminal mid-afternoon. From here, there are a couple of options. There are plenty of picnic options in New Farm Park, which is a beautiful spot in the sun on a Sunday afternoon. If you’re looking to impress, Watt Dining at the Powerhouse is nearby, or you can take a short stroll to Bitter Suite. Both are great choices for a late lunch and drinks.

Leave

Stroll back to New Farm ferry terminal and catch one of the regular CityCats back to your destination. Whatever happens from there, it’ll be a great way to put off them Sunday night feels! (Unless, of course, your date is horrible, in which case it might make them even worse.)

3. Midweek at Bulimba

Meet

City — Follow the same instructions as Friday night at Eat Street Markets!

North — Follow the same instructions as Friday night at Eat Street Markets or meet at Portside after work for a drink at Byblos or Belvedere before jumping on a UQ-bound CityCat at Brett’s Wharf. They leave every 15 minutes.

South — Meet at South Bank for a drink at Stokehouse Bar or Cove Bar before jumping on a Hamilton-bound CityCat. They leave every 15 minutes up until 6:51pm.

Arrive

You’ll arrive at Bulimba ferry terminal before 7pm. There are a plethora of choices along Oxford Street, but good options are Sugo Mi (c’mon, who doesn’t get in the mood for romance after a few wines and an Italian dinner?), The Jetty Oxford (which is right next to the stop, if you don’t feel like a walk), or Southern Attitude. After dinner you could head for some dessert at Nom Nom Gelato or some chocolate at Max Brenner.

Leave

Stroll back down to Bulimba ferry terminal and catch one of the regular CityCats back to your destination — just keep in mind the last one leaves at 10:43pm for UQ and 11:30pm for Hamilton. Hopefully the date goes so well, you’ll have something to talk about at work the next day!

4. Saturday night at Park Road

Meet

City — Catch a train or bus into the city, meet up, walk down to Eagle Street and grab a drink at Mr & Mrs G’s or Blackbird. CityCats leave Riverside every 30 minutes so jump on one heading towards UQ.

North — Meet at Portside and grab a drink at Byblos or Belvedere before walking down to the Brett’s Wharf ferry terminal and getting on a UQ-bound CityCat that leaves every 30 minutes.

South — Meet at South Bank for a drink at Stokehouse Bar or Cove Bar before jumping on a UQ-bound CityCat. They leave every 30 minutes.

Arrive

Arrive at the Milton ferry terminal and take a short walk to Park Road. Have dinner at Bistro Alegria, La Dolce Vita or Rue De Paris. Afterwards, grab a beer at Scratch or a cocktail at Tuk Tuk Bar.

Leave

Walk back down to the Milton ferry terminal for a CityCat back to where you left from. What happens after that is up to you and your date, but keep in mind all our pre-drink suggestions will still be open when you get back. And hey, it’s a Saturday night — who isn’t up for one more?!
