A devilishly funny new production – about the journey into old age – is set to kick off Queensland Theatre Company’s 2016 season at the Playhouse, QPAC this month.
Following the critically acclaimed Ladies in Black, which closed the Company’s 2015 season, Quartet will open 2016 with one hilarious romp at Playhouse, QPAC on Saturday 30 January.
In this moving and all-too-truthful take of the frustrations and fears of getting old, writer Ronald Harwood (author of Another Time, The Dresser and Interpreters) takes on retirement with tenderness, grace, humour and hope – but no self-pity.
The story of Quartet begins in a country house in Kent, where retired opera singers Reggie, Cecily and Wilfred have been put out to pasture in a country retirement home after wowing the world.
Other than scatty Cissy’s wandering memory, flirty Wilf’s obsession with dirty talk and gentleman Reggie’s ongoing battle to get bloody marmalade with breakfast, all is well.
The annual concert marking composer Verdi’s birthday is the next headline event for the trio. Serenity in the dressing room however, is shattered by the arrival of their old fourth member and Reggie’s ex-wife Jean – a real diva.
Can the quartet put aside old grudges for one more show-stopping finale? You’ll have to wait and see!
Under the direction of Andrea Moor (Venus in Fur, Grounded), Quartet really honours the original stage show which debuted in 1999 at the Albery Theatre in London. Its touching themes of art illuminating life, the stresses of getting old and passions in the world of music struck a chord with audiences worldwide.
Starring screen and stage powerhouse Andrew McFarlane (Glitch, Truth, A Place to Call Home, Love Child, Water Rats, Blue Heelers and Underbelly: A Tale of Two Cities among others) and award-winning actors Christine Amor (Prisoner, Are you Being Served?, H20-Just Add Water and Carson’s Law), Trevor Stuart (Design For Living, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, Wrong Side of the Moon, and Antigone) and QTC stalwart Kate Wilson (Cyber Wars), Quartet is set to be a stunning opening for Queensland Theatre Company’s 2016 season.
Don’t miss it! Quartet is on from 30 January to 21 February at QPAC. For more information or for tickets visit www.qpac.com.au/event/qtc_quartet_16.aspx
