Brisbane’s biggest bi-annual sustainability festival is back. Here’s a run-down of the not-to-be-missed events.

Brisbane’s Green Heart Fair is a family event that promotes innovative green living and sustainability. And this year it’s back — bigger and greener than ever.

This year the fair will welcome over 100 of Brisbane’s leading sustainability organisations. There will be something for everyone including community groups, artisans, foodies, green-thumbs, conservationists and businesses. Also on hand will be eco-experts who will be able to share both knowledge and information on how to live more sustainably.

The fair will be packed with events and entertainment throughout the day. And for the very first time the Brisbane Billycart Championships will be held at the fair. Even Brisbane’s Lord Mayor and Deputy Mayor will go head to head in a race!

What you’ll find at the fair

Sustainable living

Being environmentally friendly will be made a breeze with easy-to-implement ideas for sustainable living, including energy saving and easy eco-friendly solutions for every home. Bee One Third is delectable honey bottled from various neighbourhoods across Brisbane. Tastings will be available and bee-keeping expert Jack Wilson Stone will be on hand to provide tips and tricks. tasting will also be available. Learn how to create your own thriving sustainable vegetable garden in backyard or patio with Lukas Ritson from Own Grown Organics, how to raise and keep happy healthy hens in your backyard with Claire Bickle, or even how to make your own worm farm with Jean Delzoppo.

Kids sustainability hub

Kids will learn that living sustainably can be fun through some of their favourite TV friends. They will also be entertained by Peppa Pig and George in their interactive live shows on the main stage and ABC’s dirtgirlworld’s activity centre in the kid’s hub. Other activities include herb and veggie planting, rock climbing, face painting, interacting with Australian wildlife, an obstacle course and drumming and musical instrument groups.

Sustainable sports

Join Brisbane’s biggest Billycart Championships alongside the Brisbane City Council’s Lord Mayor, Cr Graham Quirk, and Deputy Lord Mayor, Cr Adrian Schrinner – who will be going ‘head to head’ at 10:30am. All those above six years of age are able to register and join in on the fun and can even bring along their own home-made or recycled billycart. Billycarts will also be available for hire on the day. Healthy and organic eating

Foodies who enjoy cooking healthy and organic meals will be treated to live cooking demonstrations in the Grow.Eat.Live marquee. From a cook off between My Kitchen Rules’ most loved Brisbane mates Rob and Dave to Green Living Australia’s cheese making demonstration – tantalise your tastebuds with new sustainable recipes, ideas and flavours.

Sustainable commuting 

Families can enjoy an early, all abilities fun ride with Yellow Jersey Bike Shop at 8am through the picturesque Carindale Recreation Reserve or catch the jaw-dropping Expressive Bikes stunt show.

Calling all fashionistas
Eco fashions will be on show with fair-goers able to browse sustainable style through an array of BrisStyle Markets’ local exhibitors. Spoil yourself to unique handcrafted products by local artisans like Little Red Head Jewellery, Delightful Beads, Terrario or Kiss My Patootie.

Interactive arts project
Tap into your creative side with Hands On Art’s craft workshops suitable for the whole family. Australia’s largest creative re-use centre, Reverse Garbage Queensland will also be running an interactive arts project where Brisbane residents can create and take home flower pot people from recycled materials.

Sports stars go ‘green’

Under fives can participate in Little Kickers- soccer and rugby drills for kids, and baseball fans can hit up the batting field for a game. Budding young sport players can also pick up tips through AFL AusKick and Queensland Red’s Rookies2Reds program.

Gourmet food stalls

Enjoy an array of fresh and delicious cuisine on offer from various food stalls. Treat yourself to some Tastie Thai or delicious seafood from Phunky Dory. Sweet tooth’s will be satisfied with Pint Size Pancakes and fair classics Fairy Floss and Snow Cones. Enjoy a Sunday morning coffee from Mt Glorious Coffee Co or L’Aroma Del Café.

Music and entertainment
Visitors will be entertained throughout the day with music from the Fox & Fowl, Chuckale and CC The Cat, as well as plenty of other activities for the young and young at heart.
