If you want to get up close and personal with the costumes of Cirque Du Soleil (and enjoy some delicious high tea treats at the same time), come along to the Brisbane Arcade on Thursday May 7.

Brisbane Arcade is currently playing host to the official Totem by Cirque Du Soleil costume exhibition. And even more exciting is the news that the costume designer herself is born in Brisbane!

Kym Barrett’s dazzling work and incredible craftsmanship will be displayed until May 20, and you can get up close to six costumes including those worn by The Crystal Man, Cosmonaut, Butterfly and the fabulous Unicyclist. In case you were unaware, Kym is internationally renowned for her creative portfolio and has worked on iconic films including Romeo + Juliet, directed by Baz Luhrmann, The Matrix series and The Amazing Spiderman. If you haven’t been lucky enough to see the show yet, the costumes in this exhibition reflect TOTEM’s theme of evolution. So in her costume designs, Kym has celebrated the textures, colours and markings found in nature and you can see influences and inspirations from animals, plants and birds along with cultural and tribal designs.

For those that love to tantalise the tastebuds, you can view the collection while enjoying a decadent and delicious High Tea at Room with Roses. The Deluxe High Tea includes traditional ribbon sandwiches, a glass of French champagne, tea and coffee and an array of delightful sweet and savoury delicacies. Then simply sit and listen as Amanda Balius, TOTEM’s Head of Wardrobe, talks about how she manages and maintains the hundreds of costumes for this touring production. Plus, as soon as you eaten your fill, you can browse through the amazing exhibition and find out how the costumes were constructed.

The Deluxe High Tea with Cirque du Soleil’s Amanda Balius is on Thursday May 7 at Room with Roses, Brisbane Arcade. For more details and to book, click here. The Cirque Du Soleil Costume Exhibition will be staged in the Brisbane Arcade until May 20.
