Brisbane-born costume designer Kym Barrett’s work shines in TOTEM.

In celebration of the Brisbane season of TOTEM by Cirque du Soleil, the city’s oldest and grandest shopping destination, Brisbane Arcade, will host an exclusive exhibition of costumes from the show.

A rare opportunity to witness the incredible craftsmanship up close, the costumes will be on display at Brisbane Arcade from 10 April to 20 May, with an exclusive High Tea event on Wednesday 15 April. The free exhibition will feature six costumes designed by Brisbane-born TOTEM costume designer, Kym Barrett including those worn by The Crystal Man, Cosmonaut, Butterfly and the fabulous Unicyclist.

Kym is internationally renowned for her creative portfolio that has included costume designs for the films Romeo + Juliet (Baz Luhrmann), the Matrix series and The Amazing Spiderman to name a few. The costumes in the exhibition reflect TOTEM’s theme of evolution and celebrate the textures, colours and markings found in nature. Visitors to the exhibition can expect to see influence from real animals, plants and birds along with cultural and tribal designs.

As home to Queensland’s ‘royalty’ of fashion and jewellery designers and with its iconic heritage interiors and wonderful sense of grandeur, Brisbane Arcade is a perfect home for the exhibition.

To welcome the exhibition to Brisbane Arcade, Cirque du Soleil’s giant TOTEM turtle puppet will be making an appearance in the Queen Street Mall on Saturday, 11 April.

Brisbane Arcade’s TOTEM costume exhibition program will also include High Tea with Amanda Balius, Head of Wardrobe for TOTEM, at the award-winning Room with Roses on the Arcade’s Gallery level on Wednesday, 15 April.

This intimate event, complete with appearances from some costumed TOTEM performers, will see Amanda discuss her fascinating work of managing and maintaining the hundreds of costume pieces worn in each performance of TOTEM. Guests will enjoy Room with Roses deluxe award winning high tea including homemade sweets and savouries, champagne and raspberry punch plus coffee and tea.
