Combine majestic sweeping beaches, unspoilt bushland, an amazing and inspiring island community and a whole bunch of awesome musicians, artists, performers and more, and you have Island Vibe Festival.
Held annually on Minjerribah (Stradbroke Island) over three huge days in October, Island Vibe Festival is a multi-faceted celebration of island culture that includes art, interactive workshops, stalls, circus, eco-food and craft markets, four stages and more than 50 mighty reggae, roots, soul and electronic acts. We’ve rounded up five highlights you just can’t miss.
Big acts on the main stage
Some funky music acts will be keeping festival goers entertained on the main stage during the festival. CC the Cat are an anthem pumping, drum and bass-heavy, brass-blowing, booty-shaking, eye-popping reggae-funk-soul explosion fronted by sexy soul diva Claire Cottone. Playing roots music before the category existed, acoustic folk/pop dance band, The Toothfaeries, were one of Brisbane’s most popular bands during the 1990s and will also take to the stage. Other acts include Archie Roach, Katia Demeester, The Flumes and Black Jesus Experience.
The brand new Eco Space
This venue is a new addition to the festival and is intended to help educate and inspire people on ocean and environmental conservation. This venue is a collaboration from the Community and Cultural Program committee and the Sustainability Team. This year, Pollinate Energy is bringing portable solar lights to Island Vibe. By purchasing a light, you will be contributing directly their work on the ground in India, while making a smart, sustainable choice for lighting your way through the festival.
Hands on workshops and forums
A range of workshops will be on hand during the festival so you have the chance to learn some new skills. Screen printing, weaving, dance and music workshops will all be on offer for you to enjoy. Surf lessons will let you get a taste of the ocean and you can learn how to make beautiful things in a sand art class or take part in an African drumming circle. Storytelling classes and body art workshops will also add to the fun.
There are some special activities for kids on during the festival. Island Spirit Kids Yoga is a yoga play shop for kids, parents and carers, drawing on the elements of nature, animals, dance and island life. The play shop encourages children to express freely, connect to nature and move from the heart. At the Sunny Days Planting workshops kids can learn how to plant some seeds and there is also superhero and storytelling fun to be had.
Beach clean up
It’s important to enjoy the festival, but it’s also important to give back. On Saturday from 2pm to 4pm a group beach cleanup will be held. Enjoy being out in the open salty air and leave with the satisfaction of knowing that you’ve helped to keep the beautiful beach clean. Island Vibe Festival will be held from Friday 31 October to Sunday 2 November.
