The Gold Coast Sevens is back! The ‘festival of Rugby’ brings the Gold Coast alive over two massive days.
The Gold Coast Sevens takes place on 11-12 October 2014 where the scene will be set for two days of adrenaline-filled, thrilling Rugby Sevens.
What is Rugby Sevens?
- There are seven players on each team, with seven minutes per half on a full-sized Rugby pitch.
- Rugby Sevens is a try-fest – with a player touching down every two and half minutes.
- 16 international teams will play 45 matches across two days.
- It is set to become an Olympic sport for the first time in 2016.
Participating countries include Fiji, England, New Zealand, Samoa, South Africa and Wales.
Also known as Australia’s biggest fancy dress party, the Gold Coast Sevens attracts a passionate crowd who proudly support their country. Those who attend dress up as anything and everything, from Smurfs to Transformers to pirates, even crayons!
This year, the Gold Coast Sevens takes on added significance with the tournament being the first ever time that a HSBC World Series event has been a part of the Olympic qualification process. Competing countries on the 2014/15 World Series circuit will be vying for a top four berth that will see them automatically qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
