Donald Trump made headlines earlier this month when it emerged that he’d bought an illustrated portrait of himself with money that was intended for charity. Now you can have one, too — and you won’t even need to embezzle any charities to do it!

It seems like just yesterday that Brisbane homemakers were getting excited about Pottery Barn and West Elm finally opening in Brisbane, and now they’re celebrating their first birthday.

To celebrate the occasion, Brisbane-based illustrator Emily Nelson will be creating free illustrated portraits of customers who make any purchase at West Elm on Saturday 1 October.

The portraits will be created on a first-come, first-served basis. Each customer will receive a token which they can redeem to receive their illustrated portrait.

Considering Trump’s portrait reportedly cost him $20,000, this is a pretty sweet deal — and it’ll make for a hell of a conversation starter next time you have guests over.

Other festivities will include the West Elm Creatives Corner, which will give you a chance to see three of Brisbane’s finest local makers — Karen Carr, Nikki Hernan and Vanessa Macphail — work on a communal table and showcase their practice and personal work from 10am to 1pm.

You’ll be able to pick a posy in Pottery Barn, as the first 50 customers to make a purchase from the store will receive a free posy from Twig & Grace. They’ll also be demonstrating a live floral installation inside Pottery Barn from 11am.

Local stylist Kara Hynes (of Lulu Lucky fame) will also be on hand to show Pottery Barn customers how to style a magazine-worthy bed from 2pm to 3pm.

There’ll be plenty for the kids to do, too — the first 50 customers to make a purchase from Pottery Barn Kids will receive a free bag of ‘Brisneyland’-flavoured fairy floss created in partnership with Fluffë, and there’ll be complimentary face painting and ballon artistry (and a special appearance by Clancy the Bear) at Pottery Barn Kids from 10am to 2pm.

Pottery Barn, Pottery Barn Kids and West Elm’s first birthday party will be held in Wandoo Street this Saturday 1 October from 10am, and make home decorating great again.
