With Mother’s Day slowly creeping up on us, the Brisbane Marriott Hotel invited my Mother-in-law (to be) and I on a girls’ getaway to experience all their Mother’s Day offerings – and we were very impressed!

Our weekend began with a kind welcome by valet, who grabbed our things and gave us directions to reception. Never having had the privilege to use valet parking before, I made sure I cleaned my car inside and out, the day before. I even wiped down the interior and sprayed everything with Glen 20. OCD, maybe, but I didn’t want to be judged for my sandy carpets (from summer) and coffee stained cup holders.

At reception we were told we had a “river view” executive suite on the 23rd floor, so it was only natural to run straight to the window when we opened the suite door. The room overlooked the Brisbane River and boasted uninterrupted views of the Story Bridge, a view we could see without even getting out of our beds. Needless to say, we stared out the window all afternoon – until dinner.

Seafood Buffet

At 7pm went sat down to a seafood buffet at Marriott’s restaurant, Motion Bar and Grill. The buffet fridges and hot boxes hosted a huge selection of hot and cold seafood delicacies, including crab, prawns, smoked salmon, scallops, oysters and mussels, as well as salads, hot and cold meats and cheeses. We filled our plates twice – ok, maybe three times – and then let our stomaches settle before dessert.

The dessert bar was full of high tea style treats, think mini tiramisu, cheesecake, profiteroles and carrot cake. As we were there to review and experience all they had to offer, we had to try one of everything!

When we got back to our room, we had to lie down. We were in a self-induced food coma, a deep coma full of delicious food memories.

After our stomaches had settled, we decided to head down to the pool area to relax in the sauna and spa.

The pool is located on the 4th floor with gorgeous views of the Brisbane River and part of the Story Bridge. It’s all undercover too, so it’s easier to jump in the pool during the cooler months.

We stayed in that spa until 11pm, before deciding to go to bed.

Motion Bar and Grill will hold a Seafood Buffet Lunch on Mother’s Day (Sunday 8 May) from 12:30pm to 3:30pm, complete with a complimentary glass of sparkling wine. To book phone 07 3303 8034 or email motionbarandgrill@marriott.com

Buffet Breakfast

When we woke up, the Story Bridge was covered in mist and rain. The day was set to be a miserable one for Brisbanites – but not for us.

At 8am we made our way down for breakfast. As we sat down in our booth ready to stuff our faces, we were asked if we wanted any pancakes, waffles, an omelette or eggs benedict – yes, pancakes please, we both replied.

We grabbed our plates and made our way up to the buffet fridges and hot boxes, filled to the brim with delicious breakfast goods. Danish pastries, croissants, raisin toast, biscuits, muffins, cereals and muesli, toast, oats, fruit, yoghurt, bacon and eggs, sausages, mushrooms – you name it, they had it!

What better way to spend a rainy Sunday morning?

As we were due for High Tea at 11:30am and due to check out of the hotel later that afternoon, we decided it would be best to spend a couple of hours lazing around the spa after breakkie. And, that’s exactly what we did.

High Tea

11:30am came around and we made our way down to Motion Bar and Grill for our elegant High Tea experience. We were really starting to like having someone cook all our meals for us!

We were booked in to have our High Tea pool side, but being that the weather wasn’t the greatest we decided against it.

When we sat down we were given two High Tea options; Australian High Tea or French – we choose French.

The French option featured mini sandwiches, scones with cream and jam and a range of elegant sweets including profiterole swans, custard fruit tarts, macaroons and tiramisu slice. Heavenly!

Needless to say, we demolished it all.

Then came time to check out, but we really didn’t want to leave. We took one last look at the incredible view – we were going to miss the service, the food, the view, everything – and said our goodbyes.

Brisbane Marriott Hotel will hold High Tea and Cupcake Decorating sessions on Mother’s Day from 12pm to 3pm. To book phone 07 3303 8054 or email dana.dean@marriott.com
