Queensland’s Whitsunday Islands have taken out the top spot in a new list of Australia’s top travel destinations.

More than 10,000 people voted for Australia’s Top 10 Destinations to Experience, an annual poll conducted by travel experience provider Experience Oz.

The Whitsundays has ranked in the top three of the poll every year since its inception in 2013, and this year took out the top spot with 25.8 per cent of the vote.

Voters were asked to consider the destinations’ natural highlights; their cultural, historic and architectural features; and the variety of activities on offer, among other factors.

Tourism Whitsundays’ CEO Craig Turner says topping the poll of domestic consumers is a great result for the Whitsundays.

“To be recognised by domestic consumers as Australia’s number one destination is critically important given that 65 per cent of business comes from the domestic market,” he says.

“The strength of the Whitsundays is its natural attractions and beauty, coupled with a wide range of accommodation right up to five-star luxury, and this award will assist us in positioning the region as Australia’s premium destination.”

Turner says it’s no surprise that the Whitsundays would be a popular destination.

“The Whitsundays is a tropical paradise with pristine beaches, crystal clear water and swaying palm trees, where you can indulge in everything from high-octane adventure experiences to relaxation in complete seclusion,” he says.

“It appeals to independent travellers, families, couples and honeymooners, and offers access to the 74 Whitsunday Islands and central Great Barrier Reef, where you can swim, snorkel, scuba dive, kayak, paddle board and sail. The Whitsundays really do have it all and we thank the travelling public for acknowledging its appeal.”

Experience Oz marketing manager Matt Hobbs says the Whitsundays seems to get more popular with users of his site every year.

“The Whitsundays region has always ranked towards the pointy end of these polls since their inception, and in many ways embodies what the ‘island dream’ destination is all about,” he says.

“It’s obviously a gorgeous place, and we’ve seen year-on-year growth in experience bookings for the region every year over the past five, not only from Aussies but internationally as well.”
